No one can argue against the fact that clean drinking water is not only crucial for living, but also contributes towards good health too. The quality of surface water is getting challenging day by day as it is heavily contaminated with contaminants like pesticides, salts, drug residues etc. Water supply is depleting at an alarming rate forcing people to find ways to reuse waste water and make sea water fit for consumption.

California and China are joining this league soon. A large desalination plant in San Diego County is expected to make 50 million tons of water fit for consumption using reverse osmosis. China is also constructing one such plant in Beijing, which will suffice one-third of the city’s water needs. Many other smaller desalination plants are also working using solar energy to treat water. The current technologies are still in nascent stages. They are very costly and experts fear that they can even cause harm to aquatic life.
In future, we expect to see these technologies evolve in such a manner that we get reliable and long-term water solutions and that too with lower environmental impacts and lower life-cycle costs.
A cheap water purification system was developed by researchers at IIT. All of $16, this system uses nanoparticles to remove harmful chemical components like lead and arsenic from water. These nanoparticles release lead and arsenic trapping ions and thus purifie the water.

They are taking the fragmented bits of data available from various resources, analysing it and making it accessible for people who might use it for designing or experimenting with some innovative technology.
The movement is on to find some sustainable and environmentally friendly solution that can quench the thirst of the ever-growing world population in the most healthy and economical manner. There are many technologies right now on which the work is going on, but only time will tell what will prove to be the game changer.
